SAHEED-E-AZAM BHAGAT SINGH- A TRIBUTE



Saheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh

Shaheed-E-Azam  Bhagat Singh was a Revolutionary and Martyr. He was born on 27th Sep,1907 in a village namely, Banga in Lyallpur district (Now in Pakistan). He was the second son of Sri Kishan Singh and Vidyabati Devi. At the time of his birth, his father was in jail for his connection with the 'Canal Colonization Bill Agitation'. His uncle Sardar Ajit Singh was a great Freedom Fighter and established the "Indian Patriots' Association". He had lots of cases against him and was forced to flee to Iran.
Bhagat Singh was imbued from childhood with the family's sprit of Patriotism. This sprite made a deep impression on the mind of the young boy who vowed to dedicate his life to the MOTHER LAND.
His education life started from Dayanand Anglo Vedic High School. Young Bhagat started following non co-operation movement called by Gandhi Ji. He had openly defied the British by burning the Government Sponsored books.He was very unhappy than, with Ganhi ji's decision of withdrawing the non co-operation movement.
After his B.A. examination,his parents planned to have him married. He completely rejected the proposal and said, 'if his marriage take place in Slave-India,my bride shall be only death.'
He left home and joined the Hindustan Republic Association,which  is also known as 'The Hindustan Socialist Republican Association'.

    In March,1926, the 'Nawjawan Bharat Sabha' was formed and he became its secretary. On 30th Oct,1928 an all parties procession, led by Lala Lajpat Rai, marched towards Lahore Station to protest the arrival of Simon Commission. Police Lathi Charged at the activists. Lala Lajpat Rai got injured and later he died, to avenge to the death of Lala lajpat Rai, Bhagat Singh and his associates plotted the assassination of Scott,The Superintendent of Police.But all in vain, J.P. Saunders, an Asst.Superintendent of Police, became the actual victim owing to mistake in identification. Bhagat Singh and Raj Guru had done the actual assassination.
Bhagat Singh escaped to Kolkata disguised as a wealthy personage. Being a 'Sikh', he shaved his beard and cut his hair, which is a violation at the sacred tenets of Sikhism.

The Hindustan Socialist Republican Association planned to explode bomb inside the Assembly premises,where the ordnance of formulation of Defence of India Act, was going to be passed. On April, 1929, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutta threw a bomb onto the corridors of the Assembly and shouted,"Inquilab Zindabad".The Bomb was not meant to kill or injure anyone.Following the blast both Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutta were arrested.

THE  TRIAL :

The British Authority, while interrogating, came to know about their involvement in the murder of J.P. Saunders . Bhagat Singh,Rajguru and Sukhdev were charged with the murder. Bhagat Singh admitted the murder and made statement against the British rule during the trial.

While in jail Bhagat Singh found the authorities were following dual policy in treating the prisoners . As a protest, he along with some fellow prisoners declared to 'go on hunger strike' The strike continued for over a month and finally the British had to accept their conditions.

The Trial started in the first week of June,following a preliminary hearing in May. On June,12 both men were sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Causing Explosions of a nature likely to endanger life, unlawfully and maliciously . Batukeshwar had been defended by Asraf Ali,while Bhagat defended himself.


Bhagat Singh,Rajguru and Sukhdev were sentenced to death in The Lahore Conspiracy Case and ordered to be hanged on 24th March,1931. The schedule was moved forward by 11 hrs and three were hanged on 23rd march,1931 at 7.30 pm in Lahore Jail.
