Ray was born on May 2,1921,in an intellectual family in Calcutta. His father Sukumar Ray was a pioneering Bengali writer of Abol-Tabol ,many children's literature,an illustrator.His grand father Sri Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a writer,
illustrator ,philosopher,publisher and a leader of the Brahmo Saaj. He also set-up a printing press by the name of U.Ray & Sons.
Styajit's father Sukumar Ray died ,when he was only 3 years old.After his father's death ,the printing business changed hands and Satyajit and his mother had to leave their house.They moved to his maternal uncle's house.At the age of eight,he joined Ballygunj Govt.School .Satyajit Ray was a average student.He matriculated from Ballygunj Govt.School,and later joined Presidency College. He graduated in 1939.In the year 1940 he joined Vishva-Bharti University at Shntiniketan to learn about Indian arts. In the year 1943 Satyajit Ray joined a British Advertising Agency, D.J.Keymer as junior visualizer. He spend next 13 years in that agency.He was fascinated by Typography both Bengali & English-and he produced many innovative Advertising Campaigns.
Later he also worked for Signet Press.In Signet Ray designed covers for many book namely Jibananand Das's Banalata Sen,
Rupashi Bangla, Bibhuti Bhushan's Chander Pahar, Jim Corbett's Man eaters of Kumaon, Nehru's Discovering of India etc.

THE GIANT   OF INDIAN    CINEMA
His first film was Pather Panchali. He started shooting in late 1952 with his personal savings and hoped to raise more fund once he had some passages shot,but did not succeed. At last,with a loan from W.B. Government,Ray, finally completed the film.It was released in 1955.It earned numerous Awards.Ray directed 36 films,including feature films,documentaries and shorts. His few films are Aparajito (won Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival),Parash Pathar,Jalsahar,Apur Sansar,Devi, Kanchanjnga,Charulata,Gupi Gayen Baga Bayen,Aranyer Din Ratri,Sonar Kella,Jai Baba Felu Nath,Satranj-ke-khiladi,Hirak Rajar Deshe,Gana Shatru,Shakha Prashakha,Agantuk Etc. .Satyajit Ray received many awards,including 32 National Film Awards,Dada Saheb Phalke Award(1984) & Bharat Ratna (1992).

ACHIEVEMENTS / RECOGNITATIONS:

As a film maker he made a mark all over world. Honored with Lifetime Achievement OSCAR Award and Bharat Ratna. Ray is the second film personality after Chaplin to have been awarded an honorary Doctorate by OXFORD University.

LITERARY WORKS :

He was not only a great Film maker,but also a great writer.He created two popular fictional characters in Bengali Literature. Felu Da (a private detective) and Professor Shanku (a scientist). He also wrote a collection of  Nonsense Verse named Today Bandha Ghorar Dim,which includes a translation of Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky.  He wrote a collection of humorous stories of  Mullah Nasiruddin in bengali .

1947 এর 15 ই আগস্ট  , পরাধীন ভারত ব্রিটিশদের থেকে ক্ষমতা হস্তান্তরের মধ্য দিয়ে স্বায়ত্তশাসিত উপনিবেশ হয়ে ছিলো  ; স্বাধীন নই  I   সেদিন কী কী শর্ত এর বিনিময়ে ব্রিটিশ সাম্রাজ্যবাদীরা ক্ষমতা   হস্তান্তর করে ছিলো তার দলিল - দস্তাবেজ আজও সাধারণ মানুষের অধারা I সেই সময় স্বাধীন ভারত ও স্বাধীন পাকিস্তান এ কোটি কোটি উদ্বাস্তুরা এসে ভিড় করেছিলো , এইসব স্বাধীন   উদ্বাস্তুরা, পরাধীন ভারতেও এতোটা অসহায় , এতোটা দলিত ছিলো না  I  অন্ননেই , বস্ত্রনেই , স্বাস্থনেই , শীখ্য্যনেই , ঘরনেই , শুধু নেই আর নেই চারিদিকে I নেহেরু - জিন্নার ' স্বাধীনতা - স্বাধীনতা ' খেলার খেসরত দিতে হয়েছে কোটি কোটি নিরীহ মানুষকে ,   সেই ভয়ানক দিনগুলোতে I সেই মানুষ গুলো পরাধীনের থেকে ও পরাধীন হয়ে সেই খেসরত চুকিয়েছিলো I নেহেরু তাঁর দেশভাগের পোলিসিটা জনসাধারণের কাছে গ্রহণ যোগ্য করে তুলতে ঘোষণা করলেন,"পাকিস্তান থেকে আসা প্রতিটা পরিবারের জঁন্য ঘর এবং রুজি - রোজগারের ব্যবস্থা করা হবে " স্বাধীনতা...
