   MR. DALMIYA : The Veteran Cricket Boss

Jagmohan Dalmiya,was born in the 'Marwari' business family of Kolkata on 30th May,1940.He studied at the Scottish Church College,Kolkata. He started his Cricket Career as a wicket-keeper. He was also an opener during his days as a club cricketer,who once scored a double century also.
When in college,Dalmiya had to give up on his dreams of playing cricket because of the untimely death of his father.Getting busy running the family business, M L Dalmiya Construction Company ( The firm constructed Birla Planetarium in 1963).

An wicket-keeper-cum-opener,Mr. Jagmohan Dalmiya, the administrator, carried his bat through. A Master of realpolitik and a genius with money,Mr. Dalmiya is the man most responsible for turning the gentleman's game into a global sport.
He joined the BCCI in 1979 as a representative of CAB,and became the treasurer in 1983 (the year India won the first Cricket World Cup). Dalmiya along with Indrajit Singh Bindra and N K P Salve,proposed the hosting of 1987 world cup in the Indian subcontinent. In the year 1984,with support votes from Associates nation, the proposal passed through ICC with huge majority.For te first time The Cricket world Cup was held out side of England.Mr. Dalmiya also ensured the final was played at Eden Garden,Kolkata,renovating its club house in record time.



                                                                                   
In 1993, Dalmiya long with Indrajit Singh Bindra, won a  legal battle against DOORDARSHAN for 
the selling the television rights of Indian Cricket matches.
In the year 1997 he was elected President of the ICC. He thus became the first Asian at the helm of ICC. During his period as President Bangaldesh got the TEST STATUS. When Dalmiya took over as ICC President ICC had funds of £16,000 and when his term ended in the year 2000, it had over$ 15 million !

After ICC President,he was elected the President of BCCI for the first time in 2001. Contracts to Indian Team Players and pension to former cricketers and umpires were first awarded in 2003, when dalmiya was the Board's President.


RECOGNITION:

In 1996,BBC described Dalmiya as one of the world's top six sports executives.

In 2005,he was awarded the International Journal of the History of Sports Achievement Award for Administrative Excellence in Global Sports.He is the man responsible for commercializing Cricket and making BCCI the richest Board in the World. Former Ausi Cricketer Ian Chappell has said of him : "He has a vision for the game's progress that I haven't heard enunciated by any other so-called leader among cricket officials.

END of an Era...

On 17 September, 2015 he suffered a massive cardiac arrest and was admitted to the B.M.Birla Hospital,Kolkata. On 20 September,2015 He died. After his death ,his EYES were donated to Vanmukta Eye Bank.
